The next generation...

Young people from the Aberfeldy youth group working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards have begun coming to the Centre to discuss how they can support the over 50's members create a community garden space in the currently under used green space at Burcham Street.
Dressed to impress, goldfingers and all the group showed the party goers some of their moves and got totally engrossed with the Shirley Bassey impersonator...who was amazing!

Coming soon is a consultation process funded by the Bow Arts Trust & Poplar HARCA live/work Arts Chest working intergenerationally to discover what ideas and designs the groups have for the garden space....

Lisa Bojeng, Youth Service Manager is responsible for inspiring the group to get so involved and part of the process of creating more activities in the Centre for the different groups working with Jayne.

Queen Jeanie!!

And not forgetting how much of an impact Jayne Clavering has made to the Centre since she started working her - yes Princess of Burcham Street!

Party & exhibition set up

Setting up for the exhibition and party included adding the timeline into the Centre so all the different age groups could add their stories about the club, to chart the history so far...

In the main room are photos of Jeanie, Kitt, Irene, Maud, Pauline, Margaret, Josie & Jim who worked with on the workshop sessions with Anna.

Whilst the exhibition was being set up Jayne and Peter were busy beavering away cooking up a storm and adding to Jayne's amazing party setting - thinking Aloha mixed with Carry On Calypso!!

21st Jan 2010 - Session two

In session one Irene had started singing 'We are the Poplar Girls' so for session two I dug out at BAT the CD of interviews conducted by Dan Saul in September 2008 as a prompt to create more conversations.

20th Jan 2010 - Session one

The plan had been to meet with the group the previous Weds & Thursday sessions and due to the snow my first session with the group was part of Jim's Teatime Treats run bu Jim from Neighbours in Poplar following on from the regular Bingo session

I had already met with Jeanie to discuss how I thought we would work on the sessions. We started off with a round of conversations about the club and it's history over tea using old photos to get us going. Jeanie, Kitt and & Irene all have lived on the Brownfield Estate since the 60's.

Jim who comes in weekly to fuel the members with home cooked dinner and plenty of tea and gossip! Jim lives on the Teviot Estate, Poplar and runs a number of other over 50's sessions in the area.
I was invited to join in with dinner - a proper trip down memory lane, reminiscent of dinners with my Gran who lived in Barking.
We used the archive of photos taken over the years of the club and their away days and holidays. I brought in examples of the work I have led working with other groups of over 50's which allowed the group to find out more about me.
"Are you a hippy like Jayne?" "You don't wear them big boots though."
Part of the ideas running around in my head are how to share all of the elements of personal history in the club given that most, if not all, items of furniture, crockery and glassware have been donated by different members of the club along the way.
"We started off with nothing and worked up."
"We got the piano for a £1 from a man that did house clearances."

"The council gave us the tables & chairs as well as the velvet curtains we used to have."

Project background...

The Celebrating the Burcham Street Over 50's Centre consultation has evolved through Jayne Clavering, Poplar HARCA, raising funds via IDCF, East India Pilot Small Grants programme to support a one-off launch event to celebrate the re-furbishment of Burcham Street Centre, Brownfield Estate in Poplar.

2 consultation sessions will be run by Anna Sexton from Open To Arts working with local residents looking at the history of the centre.

The end product will be a display of the work created which will open to the public on 30th January 2010 as part of 'Goldfingern 007' Launch event.

The show of work will then be open for a further 2 weeks for more local residents to share as well as further ways of sharing memories of the area.

The consultation aims to give local residents especially those who have been running and using the centre for over 50 years a chance to share their stories, talk about what works at the centre and what will work for the future.

The Centre is currently expanding the range of services on offer working to reach out a wider range of local people. Young people from the Aberfeldy Centre who are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards are working with the over 50's user groups at Burcham Street to create a garden space complete with outdoor furniture.

Funding has been allocated via The Poplar HARCA/Bow Arts Trust Arts Chest funds to work with both groups to discover a shared vision for the garden and ways to make the shared ideas a reality....this project is due to happen Feb/March 2010.
